I brought in my grandfather's pocket watch — it had not run in over a decade. I was told clearly what the work would involve, and I received a written plan and cost estimate before anything was touched. The watch came back running steadily, and the aged dial was left exactly as it was. That was important to me.

A routine service on a watch I wear every day. The process was straightforward — they examined it, explained that the lubrication was overdue, and carried out the service within about two weeks. The timekeeping improved noticeably and I was given the service warranty documentation before I left.

Phuket (sent by post)

I posted a 1960s automatic watch from Phuket after emailing to check the process. The packaging advice was helpful, and I got a condition report a few days after it arrived. The service took just over three weeks. I was genuinely pleased with how clearly everything was explained throughout — no assumptions, no surprises.

My mother's watch needed the hands replaced — they had faded and one had broken. I was initially worried about losing the original feel of the piece. The dial specialist walked me through what could be done and what would look right without modernising it. She found hands that matched the era well. The watch looks as it should.

Bangkok (collected while visiting Krabi)

I dropped in on a recommendation while on holiday. I had a vintage Swiss piece that needed a service and had been putting it off. The initial assessment was done while I waited — about twenty minutes. The work was completed a week later and posted to me in Bangkok. Timing results were included with the watch. Good work, no fuss.

The heirloom restoration service was more involved than I had anticipated — a replacement wheel had to be made by hand, which I was not expecting to hear. They described the work carefully and kept the original movement parts. The watch runs well now. The turnaround was about ten weeks, which they had indicated at the outset. Worth every baht.

A Closer Look at Three Jobs

The Challenge

1940s Pocket Watch — Stopped for Fifteen Years

The owner had inherited a pocket watch from his father. It had stopped running sometime in the 2000s, the mainspring was broken, and one of the jewelled settings had cracked. There were no spare parts available commercially.

The Approach

A written restoration plan was prepared after a full disassembly assessment. The cracked jewel setting was replaced using a donor movement of the same calibre, and the mainspring was fabricated from stock material to match the original specification. The aged enamel dial was cleaned conservatively and left with its original patina.

The Outcome

The watch was returned running within ±45 seconds per day, appropriate for its age and design. Original parts not reused were returned separately. The owner described the result as exactly what he had hoped for — functional, and unchanged in character.

Duration: 11 weeks

The Challenge

1970s Dress Watch — Dulled Dial, Faded Hands

A watch with a silver lacquer dial that had yellowed and hands whose lume had darkened to near-black. The movement was running acceptably. The owner wanted the watch to look presentable again without losing its vintage feel.

The Approach

The dial was assessed as safe to clean, and a gentle aqueous cleaning was carried out that brightened the lacquer without removing the natural ageing. New old-stock hands from the period were sourced to match the original style and size. The lume on the new hands was darkened slightly to sit better against the dial's tone.

The Outcome

The watch looked refreshed rather than restored — which was exactly the brief. The owner was clear he did not want it to look new, and the result respected that. He described it as looking the way it probably did in the early 1980s rather than when it left the factory.

Duration: 3 weeks

Daily Wearer — Rate Drifting, Winding Crown Stiff

A working wristwatch that had been worn daily for eight years without a service. It was losing about four minutes per day and the crown had become noticeably stiff to pull and turn. The owner needed it back within three weeks.

The Approach

A routine care service was carried out. The stem and crown assembly were cleaned and the worn gasket replaced, resolving the stiffness. The dried lubricant on the keyless works was one cause of the rate drift; after a full clean and relube, the movement settled well.

The Outcome

Returned in eleven days. Rate was within +8 seconds per day in the wearing position — a normal result for this calibre. Crown operation was smooth. Written warranty provided. The owner said it felt like a different watch.

Duration: 11 days
